Welcome to Appling County Genealogy

Welcome to the Appling County blog. This blog will compliment the USGenWeb Appling County page and provide updates and additional information. I hope to be able to keep everyone posted on the progress of transcription projects, upcoming updates, as well as files and information that I'm hoping to post to the USGenWeb county site.

Currently I am working on the following projects for Appling County:

* Death Certificate transcriptions from 1919-1930 : The Georgia Virtual Vault has all GA death certificates from 1919-1930 indexed by the person's name, parents name, and place of death. I hope to transcribe all of the death certificates for Appling and Jeff Davis counties to make searching through them easier. Several problems I have run into while searching for death certificates are 1) the person's name has been misspelled 2) the handwriting is illegible 3) a nickname has been used 4) incorrect information has been included 5) the cerficiate has been indexed incorrectly (remember, it is up to the judgement of each person indexing the certificates).

* WWI and WWII draft registration card transcriptions : Hopefully I will be able to get these done more quickly than the death certificates. There are fewer of them and less information included to transcribe.

* 1860 census : I began this several months ago but wasn't able to immediately finish it. The first portion of the 1860 Appling Co. census is located on the USGenWeb Project Archives site for Appling Co.

* Gathering family photos from Appling and Jeff Davis counties: This is the one I'm most excited about! I am desperate for family photos of our ancestors, everytime I find another one I will post it to the site. PLEASE consider sharing any family photos you have or contact someone you know who has some photos.

Hopefully I will be able to update this blog twice a month at the very least, more times if possible! I have lots of information and tips for how to conduct your family research and more Appling Co. resources to share!

Please leave a comment if you've visited this site - I would LOVE to hear from you! And please feel free to ask any questions and/or offer any suggestions.
